Matt Nickels provides specialist stained glass conservation, restoration, repair and maintenance services for churches, chapels and other religious buildings throughout Yorkshire and across the UK. Work ranges from condition surveys, consultancy and conservation cleaning to traditional re-leading, painted glass repair and the conservation of associated metalwork.

With decades of experience working with historic stained glass, including work at York Glaziers Trust and York Minster, Matt approaches each window according to its historic significance, condition and setting. Conservation work uses appropriate materials and techniques informed by current research and established conservation practice.

Matt is also co-director of Northern Lights Stained Glass - www.northernlightsstainedglass.co.uk which specializes in Icon accredited conservation and large scale works. Get in touch and find the right path for your stained glass needs.

Consultancy and Reports - We offer a report writing service scaled to match your needs and budget. This can include historic analysis, detailed photographic diagrams, documentation, condition reports and suggested remedial options.

Stained glass conservation - We offer a conservation service of repair and maintenance which is always sympathetic and appropriate to the original stained glass window fabric and location. We use techniques and materials which are based upon current academic research and international best practice.

Traditional repair of stained glass and leaded lights - When necessary, we repair stained glass and leaded lights in the traditional method where they are taken apart and re-leaded or partially re-leaded. The glass is then rebuilt within a new lead matrix with lead profiles matching the original.

Stained glass cleaning - Windows often suffer deterioration and harm from fire damage, dirt ingress and microbial growth. We offer a service where we carefully clean stained glass and leaded lights in-situ and in the studio. We use modern and appropriate techniques tailored towards the specific needs of the window.

Casement, ferramenta, grilles and bars - We work on the ironmongery and metal casements associated with stained glass. We can refurbish and decorate all elements of bars, ferramenta and casements, as well as tip bars which have damaged the surrounding stonework.
