Matt Nickels Stained Glass is a specialist stained glass studio based in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, creating, repairing and conserving stained glass for clients throughout Yorkshire and across the UK.

Matt grew up in a family-run stained glass business and is the resident stained glass expert on BBC One's The Repair Shop. With decades of experience, he has worked with York Glaziers Trust at York Minster, created glass for a gold medal-winning RHS Chelsea Flower Show garden and holds an MA with Distinction in Stained Glass Conservation and Heritage Management.

All stained glass services undertaken from bespoke stained glass commissions and residential leaded lights to stained glass repair, restoration and conservation, every project combines traditional craftsmanship with specialist knowledge and an understanding of historic glass.

Repairs & Restoration

From small repairs to the complete restoration and re-leading of stained glass windows, Matt provides specialist repair services from his Scarborough studio throughout Yorkshire and across the UK. Original glass is retained wherever possible, with traditional materials and techniques used to preserve the character and craftsmanship of each window.

Residential Stained Glass

Bespoke stained glass designed, made and restored for homes, from traditional leaded lights and period front doors to contemporary commissions. Each project is individually designed to complement the architecture, character and light of the property.

Stained glass can also be encapsulated within double glazed units to fit into modern upvc frames and doors.

Historic Buildings

Specialist conservation and restoration of historic stained glass, leaded lights and associated metalwork in listed buildings and heritage properties. Work is approached with an emphasis on retaining original material, understanding historic significance and using appropriate conservation techniques.

Stained Glass Courses

Learn traditional stained glass and fused glass techniques at Matt’s studio in Scarborough, North Yorkshire. Courses range from one-day beginner workshops to evening classes and fused glass sessions, providing hands-on tuition in a working stained glass studio.

BBC’s The Repair Shop

Matt is the resident stained glass expert on BBC One’s The Repair Shop, using traditional skills and conservation techniques to restore treasured stained glass and decorative glass objects. Since joining the programme, Matt has worked on a wide variety of unique and historically significant pieces, helping to preserve their craftsmanship, character and personal stories.

RHS Chelsea Flower Show

In 2026, Matt created a 28-piece fused glass installation with artist Rachel Welford for The Children’s Society Garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Designed by Patrick Clarke, the garden was awarded a Gold Medal.
